Subject: Cat tricks...

Background: We had a previous cat, Water, and we then adopted/rescued Nina and Tati, daughter and mom. Nina got along with Water, Tati hated water. We had to keep Water and Tati separated, so the rule was that Tati stayed in the master bedroom during the day, and got the house at night, and Water stayed in the garage at night, and got the house during the day.

We taught our kitty Nina to "Go get your mommy!" which meant "Run to the bedroom door and wait for me there!" She was very obedient about it too.

don't know if it counts as a trick, but it was useful.

Then in college, I taught Jerry, the big black Maine Coon who lived on our floor, "No", "Down", and "Not right now". "No" and he would stop what he was doing. "Down" and he would get off whatever he was on. "Not right now" and he would stop begging to be played with or picked up or petted or whatever, and wait patiently -- because I'd taught him that I would always do whatever it was he'd wanted as soon as I was done with my current task (e.g. washing dishes). He also knew "Not today, Jerry" which meant "I can't pick you up today, but give me a minute, and I'll sit down and let you have a lap".

Very nice cat. I used to talk to him all the time -- more than I talked to the humans -- and he would mew back. Everyone on my floor thought I was a total freak, until my mom came to visit and she did it too! Then they thought my mom was a freak and I was just her daughter. ;)
